Bulgarian MPs have confirmed that smoking will be banned in public places from June 1 2010 after approving the changes to Bulgaria's Health Act.

The Bulgarian MPs approved Friday a smoking ban in indoor public spaces, effective June 1, 2010 but have now confirmed the decision by passing a law on the issue.

The National Assembly also threw out the proposal by Ramadan Atalay from the ethnic Turkish party, Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), who had argued for the ban to be put into action from June 1 2009.

Until the bill is enforced there will be limited smoking restrictions that are active now. Indoor public spaces are divided in to smoking and no-smoking areas. No-smoking areas, though, are significantly smaller than the smoking ones.
