The Police are working on several leads related to the murder of the businessman, Alexander Zanev, Monday evening in Sofia's Boyana suburb.

One of the alleged main versions involves a delayed investment, which led to tensions between Zanev and his business partners. Zanev had committed to pour a significant amount of money in a large construction project, but ended short in cash over the financial crisis, making the project a loosing venture. He had hoped to compensate with other projects, but, reportedly, they also fell through.

Anonymous sources, close to Zanev, are quoted as saying the businessman, owner of the "Sofiiska Banitsa" chain, had no debt, rather he was owed lots of money (BGN 4 M) by business partners and clients.

Zanev, allegedly, has been one of the most important and respected sponsors of the ruling National Movement for Stability and Progress (NMSP) party of former Tsar and Prime Minister, Simeon Saxe-Coburg. Former Sofia Regional Governor and NMSP MP, Olimpi Katev, is said to have been one of Zanev's closest friends.

In addition to the "Sofiiska Banitsa" business, Zanev had been involved in the construction of luxury hotels in the "Pomorie" and "Sunny Beach" summer resorts, and in the gambling business. His most important business partner is listed as Mihail Krastev - builder of the "Hunter Douglas" factory in Bulgaria. The two have established the first male "Lion's Club" in Sofia.

Several other names, allegedly connected to Zanev and his business ventures, include a TV show host, a municipal councilman, and the secretary of Sofia's City Hall, among others.

44-year-old Alexander Zanev was shot dead with a handgun in Boyana Monday evening. His body was found by two boys, some time after he was killed on a deserted street.

It was reported by Darik radio Tuesday that Zanev had been booked for disorderly conduct four years ago
