Sofia City Hall Ups Tram Routes to Ease Traffic Jams

The new tram route on Sofia's key thoroughfare, the "Tsarigradsko Shosse" boulevard, will be up and running in the fall of 2009.

The information was reported by the Executive Director of Sofia Electric Transportation, Evgeni Ganchev.

There will be a new line with a new number, reaching the residential complex "Tsarigradski" and turning under the nearby bridge across the boulevard.

The new tram route will have a second segment, still in project stage, which upon completion will reach as far as "Business Park Sofia" in the "Mladost 4" quarter.

There is also a project to reinstate the former tram route from downtown Sofia to the "Darvenitsa" quarter.

The City Hall's efforts to update and modernize the tram transportation aims at alleviating the problematic, daily traffic congestion in Sofia.
