333 unscrupulous Bulgarian farmers will be asked to refund the subsidies they have received in 2007 and 2008.

The information was reported by Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister, Valery Tsvetanov.

The number could reach 360 after the conclusion of the checkups in the city of Kardzhali and the town of Madan.

A total of 3 000 farmers have been the subject of the checkups - 2600 will receive their subsidies while the penalties for the violators will depend on the percentage of the over declared land. If farmers have falsely declared less than 50% over the real land they own, they will be deprived from subsidies for the respective year, if the false declarations are over 50% - the sanctions will also include future subsidies.

The honest land owners will receive their subsidies in the next two weeks.

About 89 000 farmers have submitted applications for subsidies for 2008 and 2009 by the May 15 deadline. Those who missed the deadline will be imposed a 1% sanction for each business day they are late. From May 31 to June 9, all farmers, who are submitting applications or wish to correct them, will be also subject to fines.
