Software piracy losses in Bulgaria increased by 121% in 2008 year-on-year.

The results of the research carried out by the information intelligence company, IDC, and the Bulgarian Business Software Alliance (BSA) were announced Tuesday.

According to the report, IT piracy caused USD 139 M losses in 2008, compared to USD 63 M in 2007.

Despite the enormous increase in losses, the amount of illegal software remained unchanged - 68%.

For example, the average rate of pirated software in the EU is 35%. The report stresses on the need of continuing the efforts of both private business and the government for lowering that rate in Bulgaria.

At the beginning of May the Office of the US Trade Representatives (USTR) released its annual "Special 301" Report on the adequacy and effectiveness of intellectual property rights (IPR) protection by US trading partners, which surprisingly did not feature Bulgaria.
