The Somali pirates have released the 16 Bulgarian sailors that have been held hostage since the beginning of April.

The news was reported by Darik radio Saturday evening.

The Malaspina Castle ship was hijacked on April 6, 2009, in the Gulf of Aden. It is UK-owned under Panamanian flag. 16 of its 24-member crew are Bulgarians, and the rest include Russians, Ukrainians, and Filipinos.

Earlier Saturday, Bulgaria's Deputy Foreign Minister, Milen Keremedchiev, told Darik that the sailors were alive and well, and could walk on the ship's deck without guards, but would not yet be freed because the Pirates were expecting the ransom.

Keremedchiev denied media reports that the demanded amount was USD 2 M.

Expect further details.
