Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov declared Thursday that in 2010 Bulgaria's capital was guaranteed about EUR 1-1,5 B of EU funding.

In his words, the EU money will be invested in infrastructure projects including the Sofia Metro, and the garbage processing plant under construction.

Borisov made these statements after he opened a factory for construction fixture in the village of Mirovyane right outside of Sofia. BGN 3 M have been invested in the plant which will employ 60 people.

"I hope that within a year-and-a-half we will be able to unclog the main roads in the city", Borisov promised stating that his administration was currently negotiating loans with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the construction of seven overhead highway crossings.

In his words, the role of the municipal and state authorities in times of crisis was to stimulate the real sector by providing favorable conditions for the private businesses.

That is why, his team and he personally had been working to secure fresh money. Borisov contrasted that to the actions of the Socialist-led government, which had spent BGN 15 M for a PR strategy but did not want to allocate BGN 4 M for the completion of the southern arc of the Sofia beltway.

"They are crying out loud about as if they are providing us with great assistance. Well, we will find the money, and will complete the beltway ourselves", said Mayor Borisov, who is also the leader of the center-right GERB party.
