Bulgaria Marks World Asthma Day

World asthma day has been marked in Bulgaria Tuesday with free breathing tests given in Zaimov park in Sofia.

The Association of Bulgarians suffering from asthma has been marking the day 1998 as part of the Global initiative for fighting asthma. It is celebrated every year on the second Tuesday of May.

In Bulgaria data shows that around 5% of the population or 400 000 people, suffer bronchial asthma, among whom a significant number are children.This makes asthma one of the most wide-spread chronic diseases in the country.

More than 300 million people around the world suffer from asthma. The disease is a heavy burden for many people, their families and society as a whole.

The aim of the Wold asthma day is to stress the necessity that every person suffering the disease should be diagnosed on time to get adequate treatment, to be educated to control the disease, as well as to recognize the harmful factors from the surrounding environment cause asthma.
