Turkish military police have detained eight persons suspected of having carried out Monday night's wedding massacre.

At least 44 people were killed Monday night when masked gunmen opened fire at a wedding in village of Bilgekoy, in Mardin province, Southeast Turkey.

Interior Minister Besir Atalay said the eight detainees were carrying weapons when they were arrested, and that they had the same surname as those killed in the attack, DPA reported.

Later on Tuesday, Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the attack was part of a blood feud between closely-related families.

Amongst those killed in the attack were the bride and groom. In total, 17 women and six children were killed and three people injured, Erdogan said in Ankara.

Allegations of terrorist operation carried out by the Kurdish separatist group PKK have been denied.

The Anadolu news agency quoted witnesses as saying that village guards, who are employed by the state to protect villages from PKK attacks, from Bilgekoy returned fire on the gunmen who fled into a valley after the attack.
