The leadership of the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party organized Friday a rally and a concert to celebrate May Day, also known as Labor Day (May 1) in Bulgaria.
About a thousand BSP supporters from all age groups showed up in the Borisova Gradina ("Boris; Garden) park in downtown Sofia for the May 1 celebrations.
They were joined by representatives of Bulgaria's two major labor unions, Podkrepa Labor Confederation, and the Confederation of Independent Bulgarian Syndicates, and by supporters of the leftist agrarian party, Alexander Stamboliyski Agrarian Union.
"We can and we will win the 2009 European Parliament Elections", the Bulgarian Prime Minister and Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev told the cheering wet crowd in his speech.
"There is rain today, and this means a good harvest for the Bulgarian agriculture. It also means that we will win", Stanishev vowed.
The Prime Minister pointed out the Socialist Party had managed to cope with the challenges it faced in governing the country the last four years.
"We are conducting an efficient economic policy. We had the objective of making Bulgaria a member of the EU, and we have achieved it. We have proven we can cope with all hardships. No one had guaranteed Bulgaria would get EUR 20 B of investments, and this happened thanks to your support", PM Stanishev stated.
Bulgaria's former Economy Minister and Deputy Chair of BSP, Rumen Ovcharov, told their supporters that BSP was the only political party capable of steering Bulgaria through the present economic crisis.
