European Parliament Goes on Facebook, MySpace for 2009 Elections

EU & Parliamentary Elections 2009 | April 28, 2009, Tuesday // 18:10|  views

The European Parliament has created its own profiles in the major social networking sites in order to raise awareness before the coming 2009 European Elections.

With its new profiles on Facebook (which has over 175 million users) ( http://www.facebook.com/europeanparliament ), MySpace (with over 250 000 million users) ( http://www.myspace.com/europeanparliament ), and Flickr, the European Parliament is trying to target mainly the youth in order to attract more young European voters.

Its main message is the date of the European Elections - June 4-7, 2009 (June 7 in Bulgaria), and the impact that the European Parliament has on the everyday life of the 500 million EU citizens.

The EP profile on Flickr will be updated daily with photos from the 3D installations for the European Elections and the so called "Choice Boxes" where European citizens can record their messages to the MEPs.

The European Parliament believes that this opening up towards the social networking sites would help European youth become more aware of the EP and its functions

The European Parliament is also going to open a sub-channel under the EU Tube banner on YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/eutube ) where stories connected with the election campaign will be uploaded.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary since the first EP elections in 1979, the Parliament is also launching a "EU Time Machine" containing a 1979 European house and a 2009 European house. When clicking on the objects in the two houses, the users will be able to see the actual impact of EP legislation on everyday life.

All the new online features of the European Parliament come in addition to its website dedicated to the European Elections launched in January 2009, http://www.elections2009.eu.
