The infamous Galevi brothers, who are allegedly amongst Bulgaria's central mafia bosses, have confirmed that they are going to run for election this summer.

Plamen Galev and Angel Hristov are currently in custody but their lawyer, Menko Menkov, stated Tuesday that they had told him in visiting hours to "Tell them that we will be candidates", BNT reported.

Menkov also confirmed that they will not be putting forward their candidature for the European Parliament but will instead concentrate on this summer's Bulgarian general elections.

Earlier, Bulgaria's chief prosecutor had harshly criticized the decision of the two notorious businessmen from the southwest town of Dupnitsa to run for parliament, saying what they seek is an escape from justice.

Galev and Hristov have been in custody for five months already on charges of establishing and leading an organized crime group and racketeering.

The two came to the public's attention after it was leaked to the media that the former Interior Minister Rumen Petkov had met with them while they were under investigation for organized criminal activities.

The information spurred a scandal, which eventually led to the resignation of Petkov as Interior Minister.
