The EC President Jose Manuel Barroso was explicit Friday that no EU structures must be set up in Bulgaria parallel to the Verification and Cooperation Mechanism.

During his briefing at the Sofia Energy Summit, Barosso emphasized that Bulgaria needed to continue its EU reforms full speed under the existing European Commission monitoring mechanisms.

He made this point after a conversation with Bulgaria's PM Stanishev referring to the idea that Bulgaria set up a parallel authority of EU experts in order to aid it in its reform efforts.

Stanishev and Barroso also discussed Bulgaria's request for larger compensations over the closing down of Reactors 1-4 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant.

PM Stanishev was rather optimistic that the Commission and the European Council would agree on larger payments as Bulgaria's request was just and well-founded. EC President Barroso, however, said only that the request will be duly handled and the Commission would look at the different compensation options.

Reminding that in June 2009 the European Council will nominate a new EC President, Bulgaria's Prime Minister explicitly recognized and praised Barroso's contribution and efforts for the successful development of the EU.
