NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer arrives on a short visit to Bulgaria Thursday where he will receive state recognition for his global security role.

Bulgaria President Georgi Parvanov will receive Scheffer in Sofia early Thursday. At a special ceremony held in his honor he will be decorated with the Order Stara Planina 1st class in the Presidency. The distinction is given to Scheffer for his huge contribution to peace-keeping and global security.

Scheffer will have a meeting with Bulgaria's PM Sergey Stanishev in the building of the Council of Ministers. The two will discuss the results from the last NATO summit in Strasbourg/Kehl, the situation in Afghanistan, the western Balkans as well as the relations between NATO and Russia.

Scheffer is nearing the end of his role as NATO Secretary General and will be replaced on August 1 by the newly appointed Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

He became the 11th NATO Secretary General on 5 January 2004, succeeding Lord Robertson, who held the post from 1999 until 2003. The announcement was made on 22 September 2003. As Secretary General, Scheffer urged NATO members to contribute more to NATO operations such as the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.
