Bulgaria Joins EU Wide Traffic Speed Clamp Down

Bulgarian police are taking part in an operation organized by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL) to target speeding drivers.

The operation begins Monday and is set to continue for 6 days. It involves a stricter control of the speed limit, all violating drivers will be punished.

Traffic policemen in Bulgaria have been instructed to keep an eye, with full use of available technical resources, on risk areas where mass speeding law violations usually take place.

Every year 42 000 people die in traffic accidents on the roads within the EU, speeding being the reason for 30% of the cases. In Bulgaria during 2008 speeding was the reason behind 40% of road accidents, and 50% of the fatal cases.

A total of 1 059 people died in traffic accidents in Bulgaria in 2008, according to the official statistics of the Interior Ministry.
