Bulgaria Interior Boasts Cheap Biometric Passports

The new passports including biometric data will be issued in Bulgaria in six months and will cost BGN 50.

The information was revealed Wednesday by Bulgaria's Interior Minister, Mihail Mikov, who added that in comparison, similar passports in Romania cost EUR 55.

The new passports will be made by "Siemens Bulgaria", the company that won the public tender. For now only international passports will include an electronic chip with biometric data. The ID cards and drivers' licenses will include biometric data, but no electronic carrier.

Bulgarians will not be mandated to change their current passports before their expiration date, the Interior Ministry further informs.
