Staviiski Court Saga Unfolds with First Prosecutor Exoneration

A suspended sentence was requested Wednesday for the very first time by the Prosecutor in the ongoing Staviiski courtroom drama.

The Prosecutor made the request during Staviiski's trial proceedings at the Supreme Cassation Court.

The Bulgarian figure skating champion is appealing his effective jail sentence of 2,5 years behind bars. The magistrates need to announce their decision in one month from Wednesday.

In January 2008, Staviiski received a suspended sentence of 2,5 years for driving drunk and causing a car crash in August 2007, which left the 24-year-old Petar Petrov dead, and the 18-year-old Manuela Gorsova comatose. Staviiski's blood alcohol content at the time of the crash was 1.24. In December, the case against Staviiski was referred to the Burgas Appellate Court by the parents of the car crash victims.

On January 5, the Appellate Court in Burgas changed the 2,5-year suspended sentence into an effective one and increased the amount of the original sums that Staviiski had to pay to the crash victims' parents.

The Prosecutor, Anton Lakov, said Wednesday, the sentence needed to be suspended due the defendant's good court behavior, clear criminal record and his efforts to help the victims and their families by immediately offering financial support.

Staviiski, himself, stated he and everyone else entangled in the trial hoped that the saga was going to be over soon. The defendant declined to offer any comment regarding the latest information, that Manuela's father, Krasimir Gorsov, has leased a Mercedes-Benz with money from her charitable fund.
