Jan Fischer has been appointed Thursday as the new Czech Prime Minister by President Vaclav Klaus.

Former Head of the Czech Statistical Office Fischer will formerly take over next month, and lead the country until elections due in October, the BBC reported.

Former PM, Mirek Topolanek, stepped down after losing a confidence vote a couple of weeks ago.

Topolanek was ousted by parliament halfway through the Czech Republic's six-month presidency of the EU, and the country must still preside over a number of important summits.

For the next four weeks, Fischer will be charged with putting together a non-partisan cabinet of technocrats, who will be appointed on May 9.

The new government will be backed by Mirek Topolanek's Civic Democrats, and the opposition Social Democrats.
