Sofia's Mayor, Boyko Borisov, saluted the Cabinet's decision to officially declare a waste emergency situation in the capital city.

Borisov spoke at a press conference Thursday afternoon along with the newly appointed Chair of the National Waste Crisis Headquarters and Governor of the Region of Sofia, Todor Modev.

The Mayor said that the decision, if well-intended, was the right one and Sofia needed state budget help to wash the city's streets. Borisov admitted he was prepared even for martial law, and the Cabinet's decision was satisfactory for him. The Mayor pointed out that in all civilized countries the capital's hygiene was the government's duty, but added that the official crisis declaration was unnecessary.

Sofia City Hall has already signed contracts with eight cleaning companies and they would not be annulled.

The councilmen from the opposition rightist Union of Democratic Forces and Democrats for Strong Bulgaria sarcastically defined the Cabinet's declaration as "the official opening of the Parliamentary election campaign."
