Borisov to Moscow Mayor: Sofia Is Besieged Like Stalingrad

Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov has told his Moscow counterpart, Yury Luzhkov, that the Bulgarian government of Prime Minister Stanishev was trying to sabotage his activities.

"Sofia is like Stalingrad during World War II. We are besieged by the government who wants to turn Sofia into a ghetto", Borisov told Luzhkov.

The Sofia Mayor, whose party GERB nominated him on Tuesday as Bulgaria's next Prime Minister, is in the Russian capital for "Sofia's Days in Moscow".

"Instead of applauding the Mayor of Sofia, who removed the old garbage disposal concessionaires, Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev is counting the trash bins in the Sofia streets in order to figure out which trash bin has been filled up in the Druzhba 2 Quarter. ", Borisov declared.

"Sofia has never been cleaner. I count the cleaners in Sofia every day", the Mayor also said.

"The epidemics in Sofia is called "hunger and impoverishment", and we are undergoing it because of Stanishev's government", the Mayor replied when asked by reporters whether the garbage collecting issues did not threaten to cause epidemics in Sofia

Borisov also said that Stanishev's Socialist Party and its coalition partner, the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) and its leader, Ahmed Dogan, had close connections to the firm "Novera" and to Rumen Gaytanski, aka Valka ("The Wolf"), whose garbage collecting concession in Sofia Borisov terminated.

The Mayor also told the Bulgarian journalists in Moscow that Stanishev's government had made 42 secret land swaps that it did not want to reveal before the public out of fear that these have incurred huge losses to the Bulgarian state.

"These swaps will be made public in a few months where the present government is gone", Borisov stated apparently alluding to the possibility that he and his party GERB would head Bulgaria's next cabinet after the 2009 Parliamentary Elections.

Borisov's statements in Moscow regarding Bulgaria's domestic political situation are not unlike his controversial statements during his visit in Chicago in January 2009, when he told Bulgarian immigrants in the USA that Bulgaria's greatest issue was its "bad human material".
