NGO Observers Set to Monitor Bulgaria Infrastructure Projects

Transparency International will monitor the deal for the construction of Bulgaria's Trakya highway and report instances of corruption.

"The permission was given two days ago," said Bulgaria's Deputy PM, Meglena Plugchieva, cited by Bulgarian daily newspaper Standart Wednesday.

"All big infrastructure projects in Bulgaria will be monitored by foreign NGO observers," Plugchieva, who is in charge of the allocation of EU funds, added.

She added that all the projects submitted to EU programs by Bulgaria amount to a total of BGN 4,7 B. "Contracts worth 2.8 billion levs have already been concluded," Pluchieva concluded

Civic control could be introduced at a later stage in all sectors supported by the EU.

The Bulgarian government recently announced that it plans to spend BGN 30 M from the country's accumulated budget surplus on the construction of the Trakya highway.
