The formal leader of GERB, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, has said that kidnapping is becoming an increasing threat to Bulgarian businessmen.

"Much to my regret I must say that this otherwise nascent trend (kidnapping) has been gaining momentum in Bulgaria in the last year. This is one of the ways the crime world uses to make ample money." Tsvetanov stated late Sunday cited by the Bulgarian daily newspaper Standart.

He blamed the lack of motivation amongst Bulgarian police officers and the closing down of some of the units of the Chief Directorate "Combating Organized Crime" by the Interior Ministry for the growing trend.

Tsvetanov, the formal leader of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) said; "In my opinion the interior minister has a disparaging attitude towards common, honest and responsible policemen and the main problems in the ministry have been neglected. I am just marking the essential lapses made by this government, creating a favourable environment for the organized crime."

Answering a question regarding whether kidnapping will be used as a form to exert political pressure before the upcoming elections Tsvetanov concluded; "I would fear even to think that. This would be the worst blow to democracy in a European country, a EU member-state."
