Bulgaria GERB Expert Fall Out Saga with PM Goes On

Bulgaria's PM threatened that he was going to request information from the State Security Director about GERB's economic expert Toshko Todorov.

Prime Minister Stanishev stated he would ask the National Agency for State Security's (DANS) Director, Petko Sertov, to give an account of the reasons why Todorov has been hired by DANS when there have been signals about his involvement in tax fraud during his appointment as Head of the National Revenue Agency (NRA) in the city of Dobritch.

According to the PM, such information has been submitted to the Parliamentary Anti-Corruption Commission and tax fraud was not something in line with the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party policy of combating the "grey" economy.

Numerous Bulgarian media reported Friday that Todorov has been fired from DANS over his debate participation. Todorov claims he had warned DANS about planning to participate in the debate. Borisov confirmed that Todorov has been fired while the DANS spokesperson said he was only a temporary employee hired as an expert on part-time basis.

Stanishev declared Friday that the information about Toshkov's involvement in tax fraud had been received long before the debate and his request for an investigation about how someone like him could be hired by DANS had nothing to do with it.

Todorov, on his part, said he was surprised the PM was toying with speculations, adding that the authorities were the ones that needed to respond to the tax fraud accusations.

"From all domestic issue, I ended up being the most important one," Todorov said.

He further explained he was not a DANS agent, but rather an expert, who, upon being invited by the Security Agency to work for them, had told them he had commitments to GERB, but received assurances it would not be a problem.
