Bulgaria PM Announces New Spending Plans for Budget Surplus

The Bulgarian government plans to spend up to BGN 400 M of the country's accumulated budget surplus, PM Sergey Stanishev announced.

Stanishev and Deputy PM Meglena Plugchieva, who is in charge of the allocation of EU funds, presented a detailed report on the government spending plans after a meeting of the cabinet late Thursday, BGNES reported.

BGN 160 M of the total sum will go to the Bulgaria's municipalities, to improve infrastructure and municipality buildings. BGN 45 M will go to the Ministry of Defence, for the purchasing of new built apartments for soldiers, which according to Stanishev will also help the struggling construction business. BGN 30 M will go to the National Roads Agency for the construction of the Trakya highway.

The Ministry of Environment of Water will receive BGN 5 M, part of which will be spent on a competition for keeping Bulgaria's environment clean. The ‘Beautiful Bulgaria' project will be given BGN 15 M and PHARE and SAPARD projects will receive BGN 100 M each after the EU cancelled funding for projects under these programs over corruption.

Stanishev concluded that more money will be made available for road projects over the coming week.
