The second largest retailer in the world, French international chain Carrefour opened Wednesday its first hypermarket in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria's first Carrefour store is located in Burgas Plaza Mall in the Black Sea city of Burgas, on an area of 13 000 square meters.

The store offers over 50 000 goods, including 3 500 Carrefour-branded products, and employs 220 people. The Bulgarian Carrefour works with more than 700 suppliers most of which are Bulgarian companies in an effort to account for traditional Bulgarian products.

‘The concept of Carrefour is to develop partnerships with small and medium-size enterprises from the hosting countries and to work with local suppliers in order to boost local economy. Carrefour is already here because the Bulgarian market is ready for the concept of modern retail', said Jean Anthoine, Executive Director of Carrefour Bulgaria, said.

Carrefour is the second largest hypermarket chain in the world after the American Wall-Mart. It has 15 000 stores in 32 countries, and more than 490 000 employees. In 2008, its turnover under banners has reached EUR 96,7 B.

The French company's slogan is "Everything under one roof". On the roof of Carrfour there will be a parking lot, which is a completely new idea for Bulgaria.
