About 250 college students and milk farmers gathered at a protest rally in downtown Sofia Wednesday.
The rallies were planned initially as two separate events, but the milk farmers changed their mind and decided to join the Bulgarian youths in front of the Parliamentary building in downtown Sofia.
Traffic on one of Sofia's main thoroughfares - the "Tsar Osvoboditel" boulevard remained on halt for several long hours.
The milk farmers demand once again that their subsidies for quality milk would be paid immediately and for a better financing of the sector in general. The Parliament's speaker, Georgi Pirinski, initially agreed to meet with the farmers, but had to cancel the appointment due to a schedule conflict with the meeting with the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese , who is on an official visit to Bulgaria.
The farmers were then told by their Association's leader, Adrian Tsakonski, that they will be accepted by the Parliament's Deputy Speaker, Lyuben Kornezov. Milk producers will present to Kornezov the Association's 16 demands, submitted to the Agriculture Ministry at the end of last year.
There is currently no information if Kornezov has indeed met with the protesting farmers.
The college students, on their part, insist on just sentences such as life behind bars for the perpetrators of the latest, largely publicized, college students' murders in Bulgaria.
