Over 1,3 M Bulgarians Travelled Locally, Abroad at 2008 End

Over 1,3 million Bulgarians traveled inside the country and abroad during the last quarter of 2008.

The preliminary data is reveled by the Bulgarian National Statistics Institute (NSI).

Bulgarians made over 3,5 M trips in the last months of 2008 with over 3 M of them being business trips. The average number of trips per person is 2,8 in the country and 1,4 abroad.

Overnight trips, with 1 to 3 hotel stays, register the highest share - almost half of all trips with over 90% of them in the country, just 6,6% in the European Union and 2,8% in other foreign countries.

Most travelers were employees traveling locally (nearly 64% of all travelers) and abroad (nearly 70%). Retirees rank second by the number of undertaken trips - 13% of those, who have traveled in the country and over 11% of those traveling abroad, but individuals older than 65 have the lowest share of trips.

Travelers have made the most expenses to purchase food (over 43% of all expenses) followed by transportation (nearly 30%).

The average amount spent on travel by one person older than 15 is BGN 144 for local trips and BGN 705 for trips abroad. Business trip expenses average BGN 196 per person locally and BGN 435 for travels abroad.
