The new Formula 1 champion will be determined by the number of race wins in the season, an FIA press release announced Tuesday.

The motor racing's governing body, FIA, decided so, despite the controversy of the issue, and the opposition from the F1 teams, and F1 president, Bernie Eccleston.

The points system has been abandoned after almost 60 years of use. The new system will primarily crown the champion as the driver who has won most races. In case there are two racers with an even number of wins, their points will be considered.

The points system will remain, and places from second onwards will be decided using it. There will not be medals for the first, second, and third place. Constructors grading will not be changed.
