Sofia Mayor: Waste Crisis Will be Settled in Days

The issue with the removal of Sofia's waste is going to be fully resolved in the next few days, the city's Mayor, Boyko Borisov, assured Thursday.

Borisov pointed out that by its actions, the concessioniare in charge of cleaning the capital, the "Novera" company, had proven the absurdity of statements made by the municipal councilers from the socialist party about a conspiracy plot between the City Hall and "Novera".

The Mayor explained that municipal lawyers were doing everything possible to annul the concessionaire contract with "Novera", without having to involve the City Hall in a legal battle. Nine smaller companies, some out of town, have been hired on a temporary basis to help remove the reeking piles, littering Sofia's streets for almost a week.

"The city inspectors have been riding those companies' trucks all night long to personally monitor the cleaning and show the out of town drivers street addresses. I apologize if some trash containers have been missed, but most drivers do not know Sofia well. In addition, "Novera" did not give us the cleaning schedule and the location of the disposals,"Borisov said, cited by Darik radio.

According to the Mayor, the waste removal in Sofia was ongoing and all locations were going to be cleaned in the next 20 to 30 hours, eliminating health hazards. He even expressed hope that the cleaning could be done by the end of the day.

"I beg people to remain patient just a while longer. I is better to endure several more days of this in order to get rid of those blackmailers. They are now attempting to get in touch with us, but after all they have done, I don't think we have any room for negotiations," Borisov stated.
