Bulgarian Criminals Will Have Chance to Buy Their Freedom

Criminals, sentenced to up to one year in jail, will have a chance to buy their freedom. This is what a new Punishment law set forward by the Bulgarian Ministry of Justice envisages. It is not yet clear what the price of every remitted day in prison would be.

Each separate judge will be able to decide when to allow the new law to be enforced. A possible reason for example is to keep the criminal from being separated from their relatives, who they take care of.

Usually, a sentence of up to one year is given for theft or appropriation the Bulgarian Judges Union explained. According to them, the idea of buying is "very strange". It is also predicted that the new law will expand the possibility of suspended sentences and pre-term release from prison.

Currently, when a verdict of up to three years is handed out, it can be suspended, as long as the convict has a clean past criminal record. In the new law a suspended sentence may be handed out to already sentenced criminals, if their former sentence was up to a year. However, the criminal will have to agree on probation, for instance community service.

The new Justice Ministry conception predicts a full decriminalization of the crimes with no 'social danger'. Included in these crimes are 'wandering' and 'procuring with no self-interest aim'. Criminal violations will be divided into crimes and offences. It is proposed that perpetrators of offences should be seen as having a clean criminal record.
