The Mayor of Sofia, Boyko Borisov, has yet to prove he is a stickler to the law, Bulgaria's Interior Minister, Mihail Mikov, declared Thursday.

Mikov spoke in connection with the permit, issued by the Mayor, allowing police employees to organize a protest rally Sunday. The Minister said he was expecting the City Hall to obey the law and not consent to the rally, adding that the police trade unions were staging provocations.

"The goal is to stage protests, not to reach consensus," he said, quoted by Darik radio.

Mikov declared that anytime when real decisions and reasonable demands were on the table, he has been ready to negotiate.

The Minister explained that there was no way to increase salaries of police officers by 50% and give them back pay, citing the difficult economic situation in the country and the Interior Affairs Act, which does not allow such increases.
