Almost 150 000 Bulgarian emigrants have been forced to return home by the global financial crisis that is causing havoc to labor markets abroad. A survey by a group of Bulgarian trade unions and sociologists has suggested Thursday that this number will continue to rise.

The survey also showed that more and more Bulgarians have given up the idea of working abroad and prefer staying at home, the daily newspaper Standart reported.

Most of the people who have returned home worked in the UK and Spain where present unemployment rates are record-breaking. A large number of small firms in the EU have gone bankrupt and cannot now employ the cheap Bulgarian work force, Standart added.

The crisis has made many foreigners seek jobs in Bulgaria. Most of the newcomers are not highly skilled and mainly find jobs as construction workers orgardeners, the survey revealed.
