The Prosecutor's Office has asked the State Agency for National Security to probe the issue of Sofia's waste crisis, Sofia's City Prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov informed Tuesday.

The probe has a 30-day deadline.

There is unconfirmed information that the concessionaire in charge of cleaning the city, the "Novera" company, owns the shares of the other two businesses involved in Sofia's waste removal - "Chistota" and "DITZ". This is the motif for the Prosecutor's office to ask the Security Agency (DANS) to examine Novera's business documentation.

According to Kokinov the CEO's, the managers and employees of all three companies have been asked to give explanation regarding their failure to clean the city. The Sofia City Hall has also been asked to offer information regarding the current situation surrounding the issue of waste removal in the capital.

The Prosecutor's office has further ordered a probe to find out whether the garbage that littered Sofia streets over the weekend posed a risk to human health.

The Sofia Municipal Council decided during an emergency meeting Monday to terminate the contract with the "Novera" company to clean the city.

The contract will be terminated around April 1. There is a two-week deadline to prepare a legal analysis of the agreement between the company and the Municipality, including analysis of the possibilities for early annulment.

The decision was made by a solid majority vote of the 54 municipal councilmen. The proposal was submitted by the Mayor of Sofia, Boyko Borisov.
