Bulgarian Capital Trash Crisis Risky for Health?

A probe of the Bulgarian prosecutor's office will seek to find out whether the garbage that littered Sofia streets over the weekend posed a risk to human health.

"Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov filed a request for a probe into the work of Novera, the company responsible for cleaning 19 districts of the city," city prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov announced on Monday.

The request said that Novera company fails to fulfill its obligations, setting the stage for an outbreak of diseases.

"Sofia municipality has paid more than BGN 6 million levs to Novera company on Friday," the prosecutor added.

All trash containers were filled to the top, while garbage littering the streets significantly surpassed the containers' volume and pedestrians, with looks of disgust on their faces, were trying to make their way through the reeking piles.

Novera company stopped collecting the waste bins, claiming it was not being paid by the municipality for its work.

The new trash disposal crisis triggered yet another round in the war of words between Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov and Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev and brought unpalatable memories of the waste crisis in the summer of 2006.
