Bulgaria Authorities to Verify Legitimacy of Individual Wealth over BGN Half M

In May and no later then June, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry, the State Agency for National Security (DANS) and the National Revenue Agency (NRA) are going to begin check-ups of individuals whose wealth exceeds BGN 500,000, the EU Affairs Minister Gergana Passy informed.

Passy presented Thursday, the schedule of measures in the justice and internal affairs sectors, already approved by the Cabinet.

The check-ups will have the goal of establishing the legitimacy of those revenues and will be conducted through the documentation on file at the above institutions. The exact number of those individuals is yet to be determined.

The Minister pointed out that the check-ups were not going to include businesses, but could do so later, if the measure proved successful.

"The action would not have a propaganda or punitive connotation; it would only verify how the property and the money correlate with the paid taxes and the profits acquired by a certain individual," Passy said.

By mid-March the new Act is going to be discussed by the Parliament.
