The Interior Ministry's Chief Secretary Gen. Boyko Borisov resigned. Upon returning from a visit to Russia, he handed his resignation personally to Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg Friday morning, the governmental spokesman Dimitur Tsonev said.

Gen. Borissov himself confirmed the news.

The prime minister will think over the resignation and will decide after he have received more information and considered the fresh situation, Tsonev added.

According to him, Gen. Borissov was called in the prime minister's office to report on the events from the last week.

Earlier this week the special services and the police led by Gen. Borissov compiled a report on the links of politicians and magistrates to the underworld. The report was said to contain pictures of Finance Minister Milen Velchev, Transport Minister Plamen Petrov and MP Miroslav Sevlievski on a yacht in Monaco accompanied by Ivan Todorov aka the Doctor.

Friday morning Ivan Todorov nicknamed the Doctor, who survived an assault on April 18 when his car was blasted, said he had a meeting with Gen. Borissov to complain that the special services watched and disturbed him. The secretary confirmed that.

Before he got his post in the Interior Ministry, Gen. Boyko Borisov had been largely known as the bodyguard of Bulgaria's deposed communist dictator Todor Zhivkov and the current prime minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg in his pre-office time in Bulgaria. Borissov's privately owned firm Ipon-1 was indeed responsible for the security of both Zhivkov and Saxe-Coburg.

As a chief secretary, Gen. Borissov became quickly the most popular personality in Bulgaria. His image of a strong man who fights determinately the organized crime earned him sky-high ratings.
