Bulgaria: 4.1 Earthquake in Plovdiv

An earthquake was felt in Plovdiv. According to data from the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography at the Bulgarian Academy of Science, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale at a depth of 13 km.

The tremor was registered 7 km from Plovdiv at 2:47 p.m. The epicenter was near the village of Kalekovets. A loud noise was heard before the earthquake.

According to data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the earthquake had a magnitude of 3.9.

The epicenter is 137 kilometers from Sofia.

"Plovdiv is a seismic region and this is the Maritsa seismic zone, earthquakes often occur in this region", explained Prof. Petya Trifonova - Deputy Director of the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography of the BAS. She specified that today's earthquake was moderately strong and was probably felt by a lot of people.

There were no reports of injured citizens or affected buildings after the earthquake near Plovdiv, the press center of the regional directorate "Fire Safety and Protection of the Population" announced.

The tremor was felt both on the upper and lower floors of buildings in Plovdiv.
