Two Cases of Measles have been Confirmed in Bulgaria

Following the wave of measles in Europe, two cases have already been confirmed in Bulgaria. One is for a 3-year-old child and the other is a 37-year-old woman. The disease has reached epidemic values ​​in neighboring countries, and there are casualties.

After the last epidemic in Plovdiv about 2 years ago - the incidence of measles in our country remains comparatively low. However, the recent reported cases in Bulgaria show that the infection is equally dangerous for both children and non-immune adults. At the same time, the number of ill people in neighboring countries continues to grow. In Macedonia, three children died in just a few weeks.

The condition of the two patients with measles in our country is stable, doctors report.

"There is no danger for them, in most cases it is easy," said Dr. Atanas Mangarov of the Specialized Infectious Disease Hospital. We had epidemic of measles that  in 2009-2010, over 24,000 sick and 24 children died.

"It does not matter what the age of the person is, and if they are not immunized and if they meet the virus - the probability of illness is 95%," said Prof. Lily Marinova from Immunoprophylactic and Control of Infections, RZI - Sofia-city.

"There is a possibility of complications, both lung and nervous system, and there are still people who are not immune who are currently at risk," said Dr. Mangarov.

The 3-year-old and the 37-year-old were not vaccinated against measles. The decision was consciously taken for her children by Emma Chernorgska.

"I am very skeptical about this vaccine because we protect children at an early age and then as adults.When sexual maturity is reached, just when these diseases are very dangerous, in fact, we are again at risk as the the vaccine wears out. Immunity is only permanent when a person is ill, "said Chermogorska, chairman of the" For Our Children "Association.

"When two doses are obtained - they are 13 months old and at 12 years - life immunity is obtained," said Associate Professor Atanas Mangarov.

While controversies between doctors and uneducated parents and organizations continue, the overall level of immunization in Europe is declining progressively.

"This is worrying because high collective immunity is the only effective measure to prevent the disease from occurring, but year after year immunized people in Bulgaria are declining," said Prof. Lili Marinova.

And although last year there were only a few patients with measles in the country, the increase in neighboring countries will sooner or later affect us, epidemiologists predict. And they advise children up to 13 months of age and the non-immunized not to travel to the neighboring countries where the infection occurs.
