Russia's Ambassador to Bulgaria Anatoly Makarov rejected the allegations of an expected Russian intervention in the elections in Bulgaria. Makarov commented on Monday the statement of GERB Deputy Chair Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who expressed his conviction that there would be such an interference. Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev also made a warning, reports Mediapool.

"There is no reason for Mr. Tsvetanov to speak that way, we do not intend to interfere in your election campaigns, we have not received any instructions on this, and the Bulgarian people have the right to choose who to represent them on local, national and European level, said Ambassador Makarov in Varna, quoted by the Bulgarian National Radio.

The Russian ambassador described as absurd allegations against Russia about a connection with the poisoning of businessman Emilian Gebrev in April 2015.

Earlier on Monday, the Chief Prosecutor confirmed that a Russian intelligence agent associated with Sergey Scripal's poisoning in the UK had also arrived in Bulgaria in 2015, three times. It will be investigated whether this is related to the poisoning of businessman Emilian Gebrev.
