Bulgaria's appeal is for non-violence, calming the situation and for rapid democratization in Venezuela. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva in front of journalists in parliament in response to a journalistic question, reports Darik.
She called for Venezuelan citizens to be called for a democratic presidential election so that they could have an equal start.
Zaharieva reminded that during the demonstrations there were quite a number of retained opposition leaders, deputies, citizens. We call for respect for democratic standards and non-violence against demonstrators, said our first diplomat. And added that Venezuelans have a democratic right to express their political and civil rights.
At the same time, Zaharieva pointed out, the channels of communication must be kept, because there are one million European citizens in Venezuela, many Venezuelans have dual citizenship, mainly Spanish, Portuguese, Italian. It is not by accident that the Council and the EU foreign ministers have discussed the situation there, explained our foreign minister.
Bulgaria, as part of the European family, believes that the National Assembly is a legitimate democratically elected body, she stressed. Meanwhile, the presidential election, in her words, raised many doubts about violations and non-compliance with democratic standards.
The deputy prime minister noted that the situation in Venezuela has been extremely tough and tense for over a year. The humanitarian situation was also not easy - more than 2.5 million Venezuelan refugees were in the neighboring countries (mainly Colombia), and more than 4 million according to unofficial figures.
