About one third of the population in Bulgaria - 33% - or almost every third Bulgarian, had an overdue mortgage, rent or other financial items in 2017, such as utility bills or rentals, which are usually paid as monthly installments . This shows data from Eurostat's analysis of late payments to Europeans.

By this indicator, our country is in almost last 27th position in the EU, behind us are only the inhabitants of our southern neighbor Greece.

According to financial experts, the average debt of a person in Bulgaria in 2017 was over 900 leva, compared to 2015 - the amount of about 450 levs. Within two years the obligations of the Bulgarians have doubled.

The total amount of loans in the year in question was BGN 1.8 billion, with borrowers in Bulgaria were around 1.8 million. Non-serviced consumer loans amounted to over BGN 800 million at the end of the year, and to this amount should be added BGN 1 billion of non-performing mortgages.

The lowest proportions of people with financial liabilities were registered in the Czech Republic and Germany - 4%, the Netherlands - 5%. Sweden, Denmark and Austria have also been among the countries that have a very low threshold for people with financial obligations - just over 5%.
