Stagnation and even deterioration in the protection of human rights in Bulgaria. This shows the annual report of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (BHC), quoted by NOVA. The data on violence against women is frightening.

In 2017, there were 29 convictions for intentional murders of women.

The perpetrators are mainly men. In nearly 40% of cases, women are systematically abused before the fatal outcome.

Even more alarming is that in many cases women have sought help. They filed alerts to the police and the prosecution, but without result.

"The Bulgarian state does not exercise adequate control over such violence.

It has no institutions, such as the Istanbul Convention to protect women adequately and the law against domestic violence also has a serious problem with its implementation, "said BHC chairman Krasimir Kanev.

Dilyana Angelova, also from the BHC, said: "Unfortunately, victims of murders have no voice. Even in cases, we read the versions of the perpetrator much more often, and yet, in stories of relatives, we are shared about a system of violence that has not been interrupted by either theĀ authoritiesĀ or the victims. "
