Bulgaria PM Leaves EU Commissioner Choice to Interim Govt

"It is up to the interim government to propose an EU Commissioner," Bulgaria's outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has said.

Speaking to reporters after meeting President Rosen Plevneliev, Borisov has said his party, GERB, will not engage in the choice of the next Bulgarian commissioner who will take over from Kristalina Georgieva in January.

"I implore Mr Rumen Radev [the President-elect], given the current budget, to sit with President Rosen Plevneliev, to create an interim government that should do the transition, to choose a date for early election so that the state calms down," Borisov has made it clear.

"If Mr Radev is kind enough to assume responsibility together with the current President, who has a month and a half more of his term, [he should] make an [interim] government and it should nominate an EU Commissioner."

Bulgarian President Plevneliev is still engaged in a constitutional effort to create a new government after Borisov stepped down. On Friday, Borisov declined to seek another government within the current Parliament.

Radev, for his part, has said he will leave the composition of an interim cabinet to the incumbent head of state. Technically, he is able to appoint a new interim government after assuming office in January.
