PM Post To Be Abolished in Turkey Under Proposed Constitutional Reform

The post of Prime Minister will be abolished in Turkey within the framework of the constitutional reform envisaging the introduction of a presidential system strengthening the powers of the head of state, reported Anadolu Agency.

Under the new system, there will be one or several vice-presidents. People outside of Parliament will be appointed as ministers.

The system will be based on the separation of the executive and legislative powers. The main condition is for the president to be a member of a political party.

In order for the Turkish constitution to be changed directly, the support of at least 367 MPs in the 550-member Parliament is needed.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has 316 deputies. In order to call a referendum on a reform of the constitution, AKP has to gather a majority of 3/5 of the votes (330). This may happen if it receives the support of the Nationalist Movement Party which has 40 deputies.

Other opposition parties oppose the introduction of a presidential system.
