Iraqi soldiers ride on their armored vehicles on the road leads to Mosul, northern Iraq, October 31, 2016.

Iraqi forces have entered the city of Mosul for the first time since the summer of 2014, officials say.

Units of the ninth armored division are now inside the city, having raided the neighborhood of Al Intisar, CNN quotes Iraq Ministry of Defense's Spokesperson Brig Gen Tahsin Ibrahim as saying.

Starting just over a month ago, the offensive to liberate Mosul was expected to last at least until the end of the year.

Mosul had been held by the Islamic State (IS) group for more than two years, becoming the de facto capital of the self-proclaimed "Caliphate".

The Iraqi armed forces' offensive involves some 100 000 troops.

It is currently estimated there are at least several thousand IS members within Iraq's second-largest city.
