The UN Security Council has reached an agreement and Antonio Guterres is to become the new UN Secretary General, announced the Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin.

Guterres is the absolute favourite for Secretary General of the UN after receiving 13 “support” votes, 2 countries voted “no opinion”, i.e. no country imposed a veto.

According to sources, the result of Kristalina Georgieva was disappointing.

Churkin announced that the Security Council will vote officially on his appointment on Thursday. At present, 67-year old Guterres is the UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees.

The official Bulgarian candidate, Kristalina Georgieva, received 5 encourage votes, 8 discourage votes, and two abstentions. Two permanent Security Council members backed her, two were against (France and China, according to unofficial data) and one abstained.

Irina Bokova, who was previously endorsed by Bulgaria, had seven encourage votes, three discourage votes, and one abstention. Reportedly, the US and the UK had voted against.
