The deputy head of Bulgaria's domestic security and counter-intelligence agency has said as many as 181 asylum candidates were considered a "threat to national security" last year.

The State Agency for National Security (DANS) also took steps for the expulsion of 29 foreign nationals, its deputy chairman Oleg Petkov has told daily 24 Chasa.

As many as 17 300 migrants were interviewed over the same period, Petkov has explained. (Profilers from DANS, the State Intelligence Agency, and the State Agency for Refugees are to hold interviews with all asylum candidates).

His organization barred three foreign nationals from traveling via Bulgaria last year on suspicion they were willing to join a terrorist organization.

Petkov has added DANS has "no information" about a terror attack being planned, organized or carried out in Bulgaria, but has described such a development as "possible".
