At least 10 people were killed and dozens were wounded in a terror attack on the American University of Afghanistan, the AP reported on Thursday.

The attack began on Wednesday evening with a suicide car bomb attack at the university entrance that opened a hole in the walls of the compound, enabling "terrorists" to enter the campus in Kabul, the newswire quoted an interior ministry spokesman as saying.

The dead included seven students, two police officers and a security guard, according to the spokesman. At least 37 people were wounded, including seven police officers.

Reuters quoted a police official at the scene as saying that the fight was over and at least two attackers had been killed.

Police had evacuated between 700 and 750 students from the university.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The attack on the American University  comes two weeks after two university staff, an American and an Australian, were kidnapped from their car by unknown gunmen. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
