Cooperation between Bulgaria and Greece could be a model for the Balkans just as the one between France and Germany is a model for Europe, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras have agreed, officials say.

The two countries could even become the motor for the development of the region, Plevneliev's press office quotes them as saying during their meeting on Monday.

Bilateral cooperation is key to the security of the region but of Europe in general as well, the two also believe.

Tsipras was on a visit to Sofia with a ministerial delegation and took part in an intergovernmental session.

The Bulgarian head of state and Greece's Prime Minister discussed issues such as energy, transport, migration, trade and investment.

Earlier on Monday, Tsipras met with his Bulgarian counterpart, Boyko Borisov.
