Govt to Define Bulgaria’s Position for NATO Summit

The government will meet on Friday to determine Bulgaria’s position for the forthcoming NATO summit in Warsaw, Poland.

The ministers of the foreign affairs and defence, Daniel Mitov and Nikolay Nenchev, will announce details of Bulgaria’s position at a press briefing in Sofia, the government said in a statement on Friday.

The strengthening of the military presence along the eastern flank of the Alliance will be on the agenda of the Warsaw summit on July 8-9.

Earlier this month, NATO defence ministers adopted a plan for deployment of four battalion-strong units in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia in response to perceived Russian military threat to the region.

The defence ministers also discussed opportunities for the strengthening of NATO’s presence in Romania and the Black Sea region.

Reports about an alleged proposal to Bulgaria to set up a joint naval fleet with Romania and Turkey to counter a perceived Russian threat in the Black Sea were a “propaganda war with elements of hybrid warfare tactics", Bulgaria’s Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev said last week.
